Greenhouse Gases: Commitments and Actions
As an environmental, health, and safety leader, we are committed to seizing opportunities throughout our business to lessen our impact. Ambitious goals drive our activities, as highlighted in the key performance indicators section.
Goals for greenhouse gases and climate change:
- Meet our second-generation GHG public goal by reducing our GHG emissions by 20 percent on an absolute basis between 2008 and 2012 (baseline 2007)
- Achieve 35 percent of our electricity needs by 2010 through cleaner energy technologies
Our Clean Energy Goal has been very challenging. We are proud of obtaining more than 21 percent of our electricity from clean energy sources as of 2010. The shortfall from our original goal is due to a number of factors, including closure of plants with cogeneration technology and the financial viability of current clean energy technologies. Pfizer remains committed to aggressive development and use of clean energy technology where it makes business and environmental sense.
We also have several commitments to decrease carbon use and address climate change. Notable actions are:
- To reduce GHG emissions from our 39,000 automobiles worldwide
- To improve emissions estimates from employees' business travel, external distributors, suppliers and use/disposal of our products so we can better understand how they contribute to our overall energy footprint
- To fulfill our responsibilities under the UN Global Compact "Caring for Climate: Business Leadership Platform"
- To effectively manage financial implications and opportunities in a carbon-constrained world
- To identify operating risks and business opportunities presented by a changing global climate.
